'T^HE Parish of Barton is one of the largest in Westmorland, bounded, as it is, by parishes as far apart as Brougham and Grasmere and Dacre and Kendal. Its Parish Church, dedicated to S. Michael and All Angels, certainly existed in the early part of the thirteenth century. 145S6fi7

The earliest existing Parish Register is the one here printed and constituting the greater part of the present volume. It consists of 90 leaves of parchment, including a blank leaf at beginning, measuring 13 inches by 7 inches, and the binding is of leather. It is in very fair preservation and, with the exception of the first page, easily legible.

The thanks of the Society are due to the Rev. Thomas Sharp, Vicar of Barton, for his courtesy in allowing facilities for transcription, and to our Member, Mr. C. W. Ruston Harrison, for his energy in obtaining additional information from the Bishops' Transcripts lodged at Carlisle.
